Social Security Commissioner: Remembering Those Who Serve

By Guest Columnist Michael J. Astrue

Commissioner of Social Security

With Memorial Day approaching, I think it’s important to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.  We at Social Security honor the heroism and courage of our military service members and mourn for those who have given their lives in defense of freedom.

It is also important to recognize those service members who are still with us, especially those who have recently been wounded.

That’s why I’d like to take this opportunity to remind readers that military service members receive expedited processing of their disability applications from Social Security.  In fact, under an agreement initiated by Social Security, the Department of Defense now transmits information to us that allows us to quickly identify military personnel injured in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

The expedited process is available for any military service members who become disabled during active duty on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs. Depending on the situation, some family members of military personnel also may be able to receive benefits, including dependent children and spouses.

If you, or someone you know, were wounded while on active duty in the military, find out more about what Social Security can do for you by visiting our website designed specifically for you: www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors.  There, you will find answers to a number of commonly asked questions, as well as other useful information about disability benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).  Please pay special attention to the fact sheets available on that website titled Disability Benefits for Wounded Warriors and Expediting Disability Applications for Wounded Warriors.

You’ll also find links to useful VA websites, such as the “Seamless Transition Home” link, and the “Veterans Online Application” website.

This Memorial Day, join me as I honor those who gave their lives for our nation, and salute those who served as well as those who continue to serve.

To learn more about what Social Security is doing to serve wounded warriors, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors.  For the families of service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice, Social Security survivors benefits may be payable.  To learn more about eligibility for survivors benefits, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/survivorplan.

Thank you, thank you, for this article!!!  As the mother of a severely wounded warrior (3/31/03, Iraq, 82nd Airborne Combat Medic) I continue to be his Primary Caregiver and Advocate.  As we continue on our own journey, we continue to meet other wounded warriors and their families. I do my best to support them, advocate for them and to make them aware of the assistance availalable to them, including Social Security.  I am so grateful to be able to share with them that there is an expedited process and plan to carry your information with me as we continue to weave in and out of the VA, MTF's and events to do my part.  May God bless you for the work you are doing to serve and support our Nation's heroes.

With a Grateful Heart,

Rosie

Nice, but why assume vets want disability first in your link, why not a link to jobs at the SSA?

I must say that the service provided was top-notch!!  I previously was rated 100% disabled by S.S. from injuries sustained at the WTC on 11 SEP 2001, but the Army recalled me anyway and sent me to Iraq.  Once injured by an IED and returned to a Wounded Warrior unit in the States, I met with my local S.S. rep and within 36 hours I received benefits as well as my daughter!!  The military dedicated rep was familiar with Wounded Warrior units and merely asked for a copy of my orders.  I am still on active duty and collecting military pay while completing my surgeries AND my daughter and I get a check every month from S.S.  Also, I have the added security of Medicare to cover my daughter and myself in the future.  Thanks to Social Security and their VERY helpful military dedicated reps.

I was injured in Jan 2006.  I applied for disability benifits in Sept of 2007 and have gotten nothing but the run around since.  My application was denied in April 2007 and I imediately appealed.  I am now being told it could take 14 months to get an administrative hearing here in Louisiana.

As far as expedited processing, I was told that it is only for the initial application and nothing after that.  Everyone I talk to can not help me other than read the computer screen.

Extremely frustrated!
