Looking for information on below knee amputation

I am considering a below knee amputation, not going to go into too many details but I am getting pretty tired of living with the pain and limitations of my foot.  I am looking for anyone who has a below knee amputation to see how it is going for you, can you run, walk normally, etc.  Right now I am in fact finding mode so any information you could about living life with a below knee amputation would be helpful.  Thanks.

    Gates.Brown,

Although, I don't have any information about your medical dilemma. I wanted to take a moment and thank you for your sacrifices you made for our country. I hope you get the medical advice your looking for in order to make the right decision. Thanks so much for all you've done..

I would make sure you talk to as many people as you can before you do anything.

I have a GSW to my right thigh and have nerve damage to my lower leg. You don't know how many days and nights I have wished they had just taken my leg in Iraq. The pain I go thru may not be the same as yours but I do understand. I have a little girl who I will never run with. I am learning to live with what I have and to be thankful for it. I am not saying don't do it but am just saying make sure you ask all the questions before.

    SFC White,

Thanks for the reply, I agree more information is always better.  I haven't even come close to a decision yet, just trying to see what the benefits and losses are with the amputation.

Find a good orthopedic surgeon, if you can.  They can make it perfect with you, in an elective situation, and then make you a great prosthesis, even one to run with.  I think you would be pleased with the result, most likely, and not have that constant pain and pain medication.  I am a trauma surgeon, and have done many of these operations, here in CONUS, and "over there".  Good luck.
